Dramatic impact

In addition to Operation Hope, World Vision’s national AIDS initiative, which targets people congregating at markets, Koro ADP has used a theatre group to visit and educate communities about various social problems.

Dramatic presentations draw curious villagers.
The visits were made from November 2001 to January 2002 and the issues raised included AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, female genital mutilation (FGM), early marriage and access to health and education services.

The dramatic presentations reached more than 18,000 people from 24 villages. These are some of the comments from people who attended the meetings:

“This presentation on excision (FGM) reinforces my conviction about the dangers of the practice. I once assisted an evil situation during a scene of excision in my village. The time has come to stop this practice” (Yatiguem Kodio).

“It is better to prevent than heal. Faithfulness in sexual relationships is very important. I have seen a person with AIDS. It is terrible. I would like to encourage all my relatives to be faithful. That is the best way to avoid AIDS.” (Boucary Togo).

“AIDS is a killer disease. I used to be afraid to be close to an AIDS patient, but today, after seeing this presentation, I am conscious that we need to take care of people who are sick with AIDS.” (Sekou Niagaly).

“I am pleased to attend this presentation on schooling. I hope my parents will hear and take this advice so all my brothers can go to school. Girls’ education should be considered seriously in our area as few can go to school.” (Tidiani Sagara).
