Precious liquid

Did you know the average New Zealander uses 130 litres of water every day? In Mali a whole family uses only a tenth of that, and the women carry every drop home in containers on their heads.

Now the water source is closer to the
village, even the men collect water.
In some villages in Koro Area Development Programme (ADP) they have spent years trying to dig wells by hand, but the water table is so low that they never reach a reliable supply.

In Dangatene community, the women and girls get up in the morning to fetch water for their family before breakfast. They carry home the precious liquid on their heads in ten litre basins.

During the dry season it can take four hours to carry one basin of water home. When it’s really bad, some families have to move to neighbouring villages to be closer to the water source.

World Vision was concerned about the lack of safe water in Dangatene and the rest of Koro’s communities. So, it joined with the Hilton Foundation, an American philanthropic organisation, and several other local groups to undertake the Mali Rural Water Project.

In 2005 the project drilled a well for Dangatene community, provided a solar powered water pump and set up four water distribution systems. No longer do the women have to walk long distances to collect water, the well is near enough for any of the 4,200 community members to pop down and fill a basin.

“World Vision has brought us life, health and peace,” said one elderly man. “Lack of water caused all kinds of problems in our community, even conflict within families. But now that’s all over thanks to World Vision. We are so grateful to the sponsors.”
