Progress to-date

The following are some indicators of Koro ADP’s progress, as measured in March 2004:

New wells are replacing unprotected water
sources like this one in Koro.
  • School attendance has increased from 34 per cent in 2002 to 40.5 per cent. (For sponsored children school attendance is 76 per cent.)
  • The ADP has helped build and equip 16 classrooms in four communities.
  • Twenty-eight communities have had wells installed and have been educated on hygiene and sanitation issues. As people begin to understand the link between sanitation and health they dig and use latrines. They had dug more than 500 by March 2004.
  • Extra wells mean women spend less time collecting water each day. On average this has decreased from seven to five hours per day.
  • There are three community health centres, serving more than 38,000 people in the ADP area.
