The following are some achievements in Koro Area Development Programme (ADP) since October 2004:

Young people learn about HIV/AIDS
so they can educate their peers.
Health
  • Trained 19 community health workers in eye care, focussing on trachoma prevention and care. Trachoma, a contagious bacterial infection of the eyes, is a leading cause of blindness in communities such as Koro.
  • Held health and sanitation classes at two schools.
  • Formed a partnership with the Koro District Health Centre for conducting nutrition training. Twenty-four health promoters will be trained and 5,000 malnourished children supported through this partnership.
  • Trained 53 peer educators to communicate HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infection prevention messages to their colleagues and friends.
  • Helped organise a health poster and poem competition between schools in Koro as a means of educating students about health issues.
Water and Sanitation
  • Trained 31 people from 12 communities to construct hygienic latrines in their communities.
  • Established water and sanitation committees in 12 communities.
  • Constructed concrete tap stands, animal watering troughs and laundry pads near water sources in 13 communities.
  • Drew up plans for a water and sanitation resource centre. Community members will be able to learn about pump maintenance and repair at the centre, which will also securely house repair tools.
  • Educated members of more than 12 communities about conservation and sanitation through drama.
Education
  • Provided four schools with 100 desks.
  • Assisted the government education department to hold a refresher training workshop for 60 teachers.
  • Trained 48 literacy trainers from 17 communities. The trainers are teaching 800 people to read, write and do maths in their native language.
  • Renovated four literacy centres.
Agriculture and food security
  • Established a new garden site in one of Koro ADP’s villages and dug two big wells to provide irrigation for the garden. Trained 43 women in vegetable production and compost making techniques. The garden will increase the women’s income and improve food availability.
  • Trained gardeners from two other communities in vegetable production and compost making.
  • Facilitated an exchange visit for three women to visit another local ADP to improve their knowledge and skills in vegetable gardening.
  • Began the process for formally registering four women’s associations with the government.
  • Trained 29 cereal bank committee members to manage the bank.
Leadership Development
  • Assisted Koro’s community-based organisation, the Commune Council Centre, to develop a new social, economic and cultural development plan.
  • Trained gardening, cereal bank and water and sanitation sub committees in project management activities.
