Since October 2005, Koro Area Development Programme (ADP) has:

Vegetables improve nutrition levels and
any excess can be sold to increase
household incomes.
Education
  • Begun construction of a two-classroom block
  • Trained 53 school directors in school management
  • Trained 17 literacy teachers in numeracy, lesson preparation and local language translation
  • Purchased literacy booklets for 23 literacy centres
  • Begun training four literacy course graduates in sewing and car repair
Health
  • Trained 36 community health promoters from five health centres and 51 teachers to educate people about trachoma (an eye disease)
  • Vaccinated nearly 2,400 children
  • Assessed the nutrition status of 3,850 children and worked with families of malnourished children to improve their nutrition levels
  • Held nutritional demonstrations in 12 communities; nearly 2,000 people attended
  • Educated 4,500 people about child nutrition
HIV and AIDS
  • Trained 60 teachers to run life skills lessons focussing on HIV-prevention; they have so far educated 3,300 students and 230 adults about HIV-prevention
  • Trained 60 peer educators about HIV-prevention
  • Organised a cross-country athletics event at Koro school and used it to educate 4,000 students about HIV-prevention
  • Worked with religious leaders to educate nearly 11,000 people about HIV-prevention
  • Registered and counselled people living with HIV
Water and sanitation
  • Established 15 community water and sanitation committees
  • Equipped a borehole with a hand pump
  • Constructed a large irrigation well
  • Trained 30 people from 15 communities to construct sanitary latrines
  • Constructed 74 latrines in 13 communities
  • Held cleanliness days in 14 communities
Agriculture and food security
  • Trained 35 gardeners to produce vegetables and make compost
  • Supplied seven women’s groups with vegetable seeds
  • Provided 37 tonnes of grain to stock two cereal banks
Leadership development
  • Trained leaders from two communes in management and planning
