“She walks!”

Yase Poudiougou was 2½ years old but could not walk. Her red hair and thin body showed that she was malnourished, but her mother, Rame, did not understand why.

Good nutrition is important for the whole family.
Fortunately, Rame attended nutrition classes organised by Koro Area Development Programme (ADP). She learnt about the importance of protein in her baby’s diet and how to prepare ‘enriched cereal’ – a mixture of millet, beans and peanuts. After just one month on this improved diet, Yase began to walk.

In Mali, children are often weaned abruptly and fed a high-carbohydrate, low-protein cereal porridge. A weaning child’s immature digestive system cannot cope with large quantities of cereal, nor is the protein adequate for rapid growth. Adding legumes or animal products to their diet gives infants the protein they need for development.

Volunteer ‘health promoters’ learn about food groups, the signs of malnutrition, how to wean infants properly and how to use local foods to prepare nutritious meals. After their training, the promoters share their knowledge with family and community members.

During a cooking demonstration of enriched cereal, at which more than 80 women attended, Yase was chosen as an example of the impact it can make.

“She walks! She walks! She’s changed,” exclaimed the village women at the almost miraculous transformation. Rame smiled as she watched her daughter toddle before the enthralled audience, happy in the knowledge that Yase is, at last, growing as she should.
