Gone with the wind
A school’s new classrooms are giving children shelter from Koro’s scorching sun and gritty wind.

|
Martine used to have her lessons outside.
|
Formerly pupils at the school had their lessons outside or in a crumbling mud-brick structure whose open windows and thatched roof gave little protection from the elements.
Last year, World Vision helped build and equip three new classrooms. The community contributed labour and approximately NZ$3400 in cash towards the four-month building project.
“For five years I have studied under a tree. We were surrounded by wind and were under the hot sun. Today we are saved, free. We [can] study without wind!” exclaimed one of the pupils, Martine, on the day of the official opening.
“As well as World Vision’s help building the school, I have been encouraged by their staff,” said Martine. “They said, ‘A girl can be a doctor, teacher or lawyer if she keeps on studying.’ “
Thirteen-year-old Martine is one of more than 80 sponsored children, half of them girls, currently enrolled at the school. The total roll is slightly over 100.
