Activities of Yangasso ADP since October 2001 include:

All schools received teaching and study materials.
  • Thirty women and eight men from three communes learnt about the importance of gardening, how to choose and develop a suitable site for a garden, and how to nurture plants. Thirteen of the women were from a village women’s association. They received seeds and watering cans, hoes and rakes so they could put their training into action. A special donation from a sponsor enabled the women to buy and install a pump for irrigation.
  • Fifty farmers learnt how to store agricultural residue for use as cattle fodder.
  • Thirteen new members of cereal bank committees received training in purchasing, accounting, cereal storage and the function and responsibilities of being a committee member. Without good storage facilities, farmers normally sell their surplus crop to merchants who have grain stores. If the farmers later run short, they are forced to buy back grain from the same middlemen at inflated prices. Having a grain store saves farmers a lot of money and also acts as a ‘bank’ where other people in the community can buy or borrow grain. Profits from the cereal banks can be used to pay for community projects. For example, the Dianso community used its profit to contribute to the building of three classrooms at the local school.
  • Two communities commenced building grain stores. As well as helping with the labour, they also made a financial contribution to the construction costs.
  • All 24 schools in the ADP area received dictionaries, chalk, blackboard paint, exercise books, slates and maths equipment.
  • Teachers at 14 community schools and 11 literacy teachers received refresher training to enhance their teaching skills.
  • The ADP helped with classroom construction at two schools and supplied benches to five community schools.
  • Twenty-seven teachers learnt about child rights and protecting children from abuse.
  • Thirty-one community leaders trained in school management.
  • The health centre in Koulandougou commune received a motorbike to make it easier for health staff to carry out their activities.
