Since it began child sponsorship in October 2005, Myeik Area Development Programme (ADP) has:

Community members participate in an
interactive workshop on development.
Health and sanitation
  • Formed and trained 21 community health committees
  • Educated community members about preventative healthcare through video shows, health talks, posters, pamphlets and marking of special days, such as World AIDS Day
  • Developed a system for the health committees to refer serious health cases to medical professionals
  • Provided materials for 2,048 households and 19 schools to construct sanitary latrines
  • Constructed community sanitation and drainage systems
  • Assessed the health of all sponsored children and monitored the growth of preschoolers
Education
  • Established and trained 21 community education committees
  • Set up a programme for education committee members to visit and motivate children and their families, with the goal of increasing school attendance
  • Supported needy children to attend school by providing school fees and stationery
  • Awarded prizes to outstanding students at the end of the academic year
  • Established a tutoring system for struggling students from two communities and recruited and trained volunteers to run it
  • Started construction of a community centre, and provided library materials for the centre
Economic development
  • Established economic development committees in four communities
  • Provided small loans to help 435 families establish or expand small income-generation projects
