Community members help renovate a well.
Achievements
    Since October 2006, Myeik Area Development Programme (ADP) has:
    Health
  • Educated 5,200 people about tuberculosis and HIV and AIDS
  • Screened health videos about HIV and AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, nutrition and hygiene
  • Supported people living with HIV and AIDS to live positively and encouraged people undergoing HIV testing and counselling
  • Provided prizes for a student nutrition essay competition
  • Trained 21 teachers in first aid and provided 15 schools with first aid kits and rubbish bins
  • Formed 23 health committees and trained 110 people

  • Water and sanitation
  • Held 150 community meetings about water and sanitation
  • Dug a well and renovated three others
  • Provided materials for 1,500 families to construct sanitary latrines

  • Teachers learn about first aid and
    preventative healthcare.
    Education
  • Formed and trained 24 education committees
  • Supported 2,250 children to attend school
  • Established and supported non-formal education centres for students who cannot attend formal schools; the classes teach literacy, numeracy, traditional dancing and singing, hygiene, HIV and AIDS and the dangers of child trafficking
  • Trained volunteers to teach non-formal education classes
  • Renovated two schools and constructed latrines at five schools
  • Provided 20 school desks
  • Constructed a school playground
  • Constructed 17 bridges so children can safely walk to school in the rainy season

  • Leadership development
  • Taught 27 people about child rights
  • Educated 5,000 community members about preventing trafficking of women and children
  • Formed 19 childcare teams
  • Trained volunteers to care for elderly people in the community; 31 aged people are now involved
  • Supported 12 people to establish income-generating activities
  • Repaired the homes of three families

Challenges
The people of Myeik still have a number of challenges ahead of them. During the next year, World Vision will focus on increasing education opportunities, awareness of health issues and community leadership skills.
