School gets new lease of life
Former teacher Teresa is happy her beloved students have a new school building.

Teresa is enthusiastic about the new school for local children.

Teresa, 41, was the first teacher at the school in her community. She began teaching children there in 1999, when parents’ request for a local school was heard by the government.
Initially there was no land for a school, so a neighbour offered his home. “I remember when we started in a house of a man who did not have any children. We stayed there for three years, and in that time, 93 children took lessons in those difficult conditions – rain or heat – and children got distracted easily,” says Teresa. Preschoolers and primary students took lessons together, with three children sitting at small tables made to seat just two.
Although this beloved teacher lost her mobility in an accident in 2003 and had to relinquish her position, the school continued. She has remained in close association with it: Teresa mentors teachers and tutors students with their homework, and her two youngest children, Joselin, 12, and Eliezer, 14, are in secondary school. “Joselin participates in the activities World Vision promotes for teenagers in our community and in the children’s council,” says Teresa.
She is extremely happy with the improvements World Vision has assisted the community to make. “Now the school is a special place. It is big and has desks for the children and a latrine. Despite no longer teaching at the school, I always ask the teachers about the children and how they are doing in class.”
“I have always liked the work World Vision does because they care about children, and I agree with their approach.”
