AIDS risk
The spread of HIV/AIDS poses a real problem to the Vadavada community because of cultural taboos that prevent open discussion about the subject. The transient nature of the squatter population and the clandestine manner of sex workers in the community make it difficult to target those most at risk of infection.

Adult literacy classes help improve health education.
|
The Vadavada Community Development Programme (CDP) held two HIV/AIDS education workshops last year, attended by 40 adults, plus some young people. The participants were encouraged to share their new knowledge about HIV/AIDS prevention with their family members.
Appropriate literature on the subject of HIV/AIDS and the counselling and care of AIDS patients is difficult to obtain in PNG. Even if such material was readily available, many people in Vadavada cannot read.
The CDP’s management aims to involve the community in developing their own AIDS education resources. Adults attending literacy classes have been asked to produce stories and pictures, whether real or imaginery, that can be used to create awareness in the community. When enough material is available the CDP hopes to use it to produce materials that will have local relevance.
