Diploma for Dennis

Community service and an unexpected opportunity have transformed the outlook of a young man who once thought, “life was useless”.

Dennis David studied as far as Grade 10 at a school in the Eastern Highlands Province. However, without the prospect of further education or employment, he returned to live with his parents in the squatter settlement of Vadavada.

“I thought there was no more hope for me,” says Dennis of those despondent days.

When Dennis became aware of World Vision’s work in Vadavada, he decided to volunteer his labour wherever it was needed in the community development programme. He and several other unemployed people were later selected for a World Vision ‘trainer of trainers’ course.

“After the training, we came back and started teaching illiterate adults, youths and pre-school kids,” says Dennis. He spent a year teaching pre-school children, and is pleased to hear that his ‘graduates’ are now doing well at the nearby primary school.

Having proved his commitment and ability to teach, Dennis was rewarded in 2003 by selection for a two-year Diploma in Linguistic Studies at the University of Papua New Guinea. His family cannot afford the fees, so World Vision is assisting him in his desire to become involved in the literacy field.

“I really appreciate this opportunity. After graduation I will use the knowledge I’ve gained here. I hope my efforts and contribution will in some ways minimise the illiteracy rate in this country,” says Dennis.
