Perseverance pays off

Joyceline looked longingly at the other children going to school. What she would give to be able to learn to read and write!

Joyceline (grey shirt) is one step closer to her dream.
Joyceline’s family migrated to Port Moresby from the Eastern Highlands Province. Her father found temporary work as a security guard and her mother works as a domestic helper, but even when her father had a job, the parents’ combined earnings were not enough to meet all the family’s needs.

Paying for school fees, books and uniforms was simply out of the question. Joyceline’s dream of an education remained just that, a dream.

In 2002, when 11-year-old Joyceline heard that World Vision had begun free literacy classes in her community of Vadavada, she jumped at the chance to attend. She worked hard and three months later, on 6 December, Joyceline graduated from the first stage of the literacy course. She plans to return in 2003 for the next stage, which is arithmetic.

Joyceline still longs to go to formal school so that she can find some work to help her parents and younger brother. Her family’s financial situation remains a hurdle, but with some basics behind her, Joyceline is at least one step closer to her dream.
