Some of Vadavada CDP’s achievements since October 2002:

Concrete tap stands are a clean place for washing.
  • Helped 163 families replace rusted water pipes with PVC pipes. All the families now have access to a clean, high-pressure water supply. Women and children particularly benefit, as they no longer have to wait in long queues for water.
  • Helped the community build 10 communal tap stands. The cement stands provide a clean space for collecting water for household use, doing laundry and bathing children. As people become more aware of the importance of personal hygiene, they are also more inclined to keep their environment clean.
  • Co-ordinated activities to mark World AIDS day. Participants received pamphlets about HIV/AIDS, which they were asked to distribute and explain to other members of the community.
  • Organised a graduation ceremony for 40 participants in adult literacy classes.
  • Provided two kerosene lamps so literacy classes can be held in the evening, giving more people opportunity to learn.
  • Sponsored nine people for a month’s training in teaching children, and planning and presenting lessons. Three of the nine are already teaching. The other six trainees may run non-formal schools in their communities.
  • Helped nine teenagers return to formal education after they had dropped out of school. They enrolled at a distance education centre (3), various vocational training centres (3), language and literacy programme (2), and at a technical school (1).
  • Helped 15 teenagers attend an electrical course and complete a two-month practical assignment. Assisted one woman, a mother of two children, to complete a course in computing and home management.
  • Held one-week business training for 20 people.
  • Arranged for 16 community leaders to attend a six-week course at a semi-government organisation specialising in management and administration training. The training consisted of four weeks of community development theory and two weeks practical work in a village in the Central Province.
  • Purchased uniforms and shoes for 17 Peace Officers. Peace Officers are responsible for resolving minor disputes in their community. If they cannot resolve them, the matter is referred to the appropriate authorities.
