World Vision is involved in a variety of projects in the Pacific. Sponsorship is important to communities such as Vadavada (Papua New Guinea) and Tafea (Vanuatu). Other projects are funded with the help of the New Zealand Government's Voluntary Agencies Support Scheme (VASS) or Emergency and Disaster Mitigation and Relief. The following are some achievements in the Pacific since October 2003:

Over 9,600 people with their possessions
were evacuated during the eruptions of
Manam Island Volcano.
Vadavada Community Development Programme, PNG
  • Held community meetings to assess water and sanitation needs.
  • Water systems have been restored in four communities, while work is on going in others.
  • Trained 18 people to jointly teach pre-school classes and adult literacy classes, in association with the Port Moresby Preschool Association.
  • Held meetings with local women to establish women’s savings groups.
  • Held meetings to facilitate peace between communities. These meetings explore community strengths and result in positive connections between communities.
Port Moresby Settlements Project, PNG
  • Supplied water to three new settlements and began construction of a pre-school.
  • Established five women's savings groups to promote saving and provide small business loans.
  • Held community meetings to assess water and sanitation needs. Drew maps showing areas where water pipes were leaking, broken or in need of general repair. Water systems have been restored in four communities, while work is on going in others.
  • Collected information on education levels of community members. This information will be used to provide literacy classes in pidgin or local languages, vocational skills classes and a pre-school.
  • Held meetings with local women to establish women’s savings groups. These groups will encourage saving and provide loans for small business activities. To date there is one group with 10 members who have attended skills and business training workshops.
  • Took women’s savings group members on an exposure trip to Lae.
  • Trained community members in peace and order in association with the Village Court and Peace Officer of the Attorney General’s Office, and conflict resolution in association with Peace Foundation Melanesia. Trained 46 village court officers to properly address law and order issues in target communities.
Manam Island Volcano Emergency Relief Project, PNG

Manam Island Volcano in Madang Province, PNG, erupted on 24 and 31 October 2004. World Vision provided emergency relief to affected communities.
  • Evacuated 9,600 people. World Vision’s earlier work in disaster preparation prevented loss of life in the communities.
  • Supported the government’s emergency food supplies by providing protein-rich food.
  • Repaired water supplies and constructed 100 toilets.
Tafea Community Development Programme, Vanuatu

Tafea Community Development Programme started in October 2003.
  • Formed and trained two pre-school committees. Provided materials to help the community build a pre-school at Anapkasu.
  • Set up a women’s development group. Their first goals are to promote good hygiene for children, develop a clean community and involve women in health care issues and decision-making. Group members are also involved in a literacy class.
  • Provided a five-day training course for a clinic nurse and held three days of training for first aid officers.
  • Supplied 10 solar panels so the first aid posts can function during the evening.
  • Held a three day workshop for water committee members who will be responsible for repair and maintenance of water pumps and systems.
  • Held a three day workshop to train the 22 members of the village development committee. This committee is made up of representatives of first aid post, pre-school, water and literacy committees. Topics included budgeting, project life cycles, planning and the concept of a village development committee.
  • Held a two day workshop for 15 members of aid posts, literacy committee and village women’s development committees.
  • Held celebrations to mark National Pre-school day. Over 100 children and their parents heard the President of the Tafea Provincial Government promote pre-school education.
  • Recruited and oriented a Programme Manager.
Vanuatu Literacy Project

This project is funded through VASS.
  • Trained 37 literacy tutors in three five-day workshops. Provided follow-up workshops for previously trained literacy tutors.
  • Produced literacy materials including a numeracy handbook, a storybook containing 14 local stories, a small local language dictionary of development related words and a calendar.
  • Formed 22 new literacy committees of five or six members each.
  • Held four workshops for literacy committee members, attended by 65 members. These committees manage the literacy programme for their village and mobilise resources to support the teachers.
  • Assessed the outcomes of the project. By the end of 2004 more than 2,000 people had received literacy training. In some communities up to 90 per cent of local women had attended the literacy classes. They are now able to communicate in the trading language (Bislama), read signs, understand national radio broadcasts and take part in community decision-making.
  • Trained 25 people in screen-printing. Six of the students sell the lava lava they produce in the local market.
  • Trained 60 people from 33 communities in the role of community development committees.
  • Established groups to support income-generating activities such as pig and poultry raising, peanut growing, handicrafts and sewing.
Solomon Islands Literacy Support Project

This project is funded through VASS.
  • Completed and printed a literacy workbook and a storybook containing 20 local stories.
  • Trained 37 people to act as functional literacy tutors. Started 12 literacy classes for 312 women from eight communities. Stocked the workrooms with blackboards and chalk, pens, pencils, exercise books, literacy books and workbooks.
