Hope amid oppression

In 2003, some women from Kanombe began to meet together, determined to overcome the oppression and devastating poverty they each faced.

Solidarite is about strength in numbers.
Through banding together, they each brought strengths to the group, creating a vital weapon in their fight against poverty. The name the women chose for their group is Solidarite, which is French for “solidarity”, emphasising the way they stand together to face poverty.

Since then, Solidarite has grown to 250 members and has joined with World Vision’s Kanombe Area Development Programme (ADP). A number of the members’ children are sponsored by New Zealanders through World Vision.

Weaving is one of the income
-generating activities
group members can learn.
Solidarite is careful to ensure it doesn’t discriminate – members come from Hutu, Tutsi and Twa, Rwanda’s ethnic groups, a number of men are members and the group includes many people who live with, or who have family members affected by, HIV and AIDS. Despite the differences between the members, the group works well together.

The group’s main aim is to overcome poverty, something each of the members have had personal experience with. Poverty leaves women with few options to provide for their families, meaning some resort to prostitution, often becoming infected with HIV. Determined to prevent this, members group together to learn skills such as pottery, tailoring, weaving, making curtains, crocheting, batik and carpentry; they sell their products at the local market.

It is not all hard work though. Members dance together, providing an entertaining diversion from everyday realities. Anna Parsons, programme officer for World Vision New Zealand, recalls her visit to Solidarite: “As I walked towards the group meeting, a dance practice was being held outside. The dancing was so beautiful and so energetic, almost contagious!”

Group members put all their energy
into their dancing.
Life is tough in Kanombe, but members of Solidarite have found that standing together brings hope.
