Back to school
People in Budekwa used to think education was just for boys. So World Vision began to work with the Budekwa community to improve people attitudes to education, especially about providing equal opportunities for boys and girls.
An initial World Vision study of school attendance showed 67 per cent of boys attended school, but only 6 per cent of girls did.
To improve this, World Vision established children’s committees in each village and trained them to raise community awareness of the importance of schooling – and ensure students fully complete their education.
The community is now proud of its near-perfect attendance figures – 96 per cent of school-age boys and 100 per cent of girls!
Thoroughly enthused about the importance of education for every child, the Budekwa community now takes the initiative to makes sure every child has what they need to attend school. Church committees provide uniforms and stationery for children in need. When there was a drought in the area, community members nearly matched World Vision’s contribution for school lunches, ensuring every child ate a nutritious meal every day.
World Vision staff are excited about the responsibility the Budekwa community is taking for its children’s futures. Programme officer Anna Parsons says: “People in Budekwa are so excited about education! This shows they will be able to continue supporting their children to attend schools long after World Vision completes its work in the area.”
