Healthy outlook

Before World Vision began working in the Budekwa area, it was difficult for community members to access medical services.

The district hospital was 27km from the villages, and the few government clinics located nearby lacked even basic necessities such as running hot water to ensure hygiene during baby delivery.

Through Budekwa Area Development Programme (ADP), World Vision has improved the quality of healthcare available locally. Solar water heaters provide hot water on tap and microscopes assist the clinics to provide urgent laboratory services. Other basic equipment, including tables and cupboards, has made the clinics a much more pleasant working environment. Bench seats mean those waiting to be treated no longer have to stand around or sit on the ground. Bicycles for medical officers and midwives allow them to easily visit their patients in their homes, thus improving the quality of their care.

Community members are grateful for the way World Vision’s assistance has made baby delivery safer. The level of hygiene is higher and the clinics now have mattresses to make women in labour more comfortable as they approach delivery. Now that the clinics are able to provide safe delivery services, pregnant women no longer have to travel to the district hospital by ox-cart or hired car. One man said: “I was afraid that if I transported my wife to the hospital by ox-cart, she would give birth during the slow journey. Thanks to World Vision, I no longer have to worry.”
