Some of Budekwa ADP’s achievements in the past year:

Wheelbarrows make work "wheel" easy.
  • Supplied 34 orphans with school uniforms. The Maswa District Commissioner, who was attending the presentation, responded by raising money for the children among the community members. The donated money was enough to buy school stationery for the orphans. One boy who received a uniform said, “Now I feel equal with other children who live with their parents.”
  • Held two refresher courses for 54 teachers.
  • Organised mock exams for 1100 Standard IV and VII pupils from nine schools, to help them prepare for the official exams. Seven per cent of girls and 15 per cent of boys were accepted into secondary school.
  • Provided 400 two-seater desks to nine schools.
  • Held a health check-up for 1300 children.
  • Organised a seminar on forming a community-based organisation (CBO). As a result, the Budekwa Community Initiative Development Agency (BUCIDA) formed and drew up its own constitution. (A CBO is an organisation comprising representative community members, who plan, finance and oversee community development. As an officially recognised organisation it is able to negotiate with government and non-government agencies for assistance and services.)
  • Provided subsidised wheelbarrows to 27 ‘contact farmers’. Contact farmers have the responsibility of demonstrating new agricultural techniques and crops to other local farmers.
  • Provided sunflower, maize, sorghum and peanut seeds to Farmers’ Focus Groups (farmers’ clubs).
  • Trained almost 300 farmers in food processing and preservation.
