Achievements
Recently, Budekwa Area Development Programme (ADP) has:
Pupils read their new textbooks at the
school library.
    Health
  • Held four school competitions to promote hygiene and sanitation; children from ten schools took part
  • Provided health centre equipment, including 12 mattresses, two cupboards and a bicycle for home visits
  • Held a two-day refresher-training workshop for 230 members of village healthcare committees
  • Trained 18 village health workers about the importance of vitamin A to prevent night blindness and methods of preventing malaria; they went on to teach 153 other women about this
  • Celebrated World Malaria Day; 520 people attended events and learned the correct way to use insecticide-treated mosquito nets
  • Celebrated World Health Day by demonstrating recipes using fortified flour and the correct way to use insecticide-treated mosquito nets

  • HIV and AIDS
  • Trained 12 teachers to use HIV and AIDS education materials in their classrooms
  • Held workshops in each school to train students to educate their peers about HIV and AIDS
  • Held two two-day workshops about HIV and AIDS for school committees
  • Trained 183 members of school AIDS committees
  • Held a two-day workshop about HIV and AIDS; 143 people attended
  • Trained 17 people to provide home-based care
  • Formed and trained nine community care coalitions
  • Held eight workshops about HIV and AIDS for other community groups
  • Supported voluntary HIV-testing and counselling services
  • Constructed two houses for child-headed families
  • Celebrated World AIDS Day; 1,900 people took part

  • Education
  • Supported 150 children affected by HIV and AIDS to attend school
  • Provided 200 desks (with built-in chairs) for schools; 600 students no longer have to sit on the floor
  • Held a refresher-training course for teachers
  • Provided textbooks for primary schools; the ten schools in the ADP area now have one book for every two pupils
  • Held three training days for school committee members
  • Trained eight teachers and 100 pupils about environmental issues
  • Supported environment clubs in all ten schools to establish tree nurseries
  • Provided school environment clubs with the equipment needed to grow seedlings
  • Held a competition for school environment groups and awarded prizes to the top three groups
  • Held four meetings with women’s groups to educate them about the importance of education
  • Facilitated 17 children’s committee members to meet MPs and councillors during their election campaigns to discuss their vision for children

  • Asha learned tailoring techniques through
    World Vision. She now works with a
    tailoring group to earn income.
    Agriculture and food security
  • Held 34 village meetings to introduce drought-resistant varieties of cassava, sorghum, maize and millet
  • Supplied community members with drought-resistant seeds including 2,000kg of maize and 500kg of sorghum
  • Provided farmers’ focus groups with 35 wheelbarrows, 68 ox-ploughs and five ox-carts
  • Provided ox-ploughs for 172 families who care for children affected by HIV and AIDS
  • Held a training session for 63 members of livestock-keeping groups
  • Facilitated nine village livestock auxiliaries to attend a two-week training course on modern farming techniques
  • Facilitated 46 contact farmers to visit a farm to learn grazing methods
  • Trained 355 farmers to preserve food

  • Economic development
  • Trained 35 self-help groups in fish farming and poultry raising
  • Provided low-interest loans to the self-help groups for their income-generating activities
  • Trained five groups in carpentry and tailoring

  • Leadership development
  • Trained more than 200 community leaders and members in financial management; 14 participated in a certificate course from the Co-operative College
  • Facilitated monthly meetings of the community-based organisation
  • Assisted the same community-based organisation to hold an annual general meeting and select new committee members
  • Held a seminar, attended by 43 people, about child rights and children’s participation in development
  • Held a training session on child protection; participants now educate other members of their communities

Challenges
The people of Budekwa still have a number of challenges ahead of them. During the next year, World Vision will focus on:

  • Increasing household incomes by training farmers and livestock keepers in improved methods so they can share what they learn with others in their villages
  • Addressing the challenges to development posed by HIV and AIDS through training students to spread messages about HIV prevention, supporting children and adults affected by HIV and AIDS and upskilling community groups to work in the areas of HIV prevention and HIV and AIDS care
