Then and now
Budekwa ADP began in 1997, with child sponsorship commencing two years later. The following achievements have been made possible through sponsorship (as at October 2002):

Without furniture, students sit on the dirt floor.

- The number of pupils selected to join secondary school has risen from six percent to 18 percent.
- The number of children who have a good learning environment (e.g. well-built classrooms, proper desks) has risen from 26 percent to 55 percent. 27 classrooms, five stores, seven offices and 19 teachers’ houses have been built.
- Immunisation of children under five years old has increased from 43 percent to 83 percent.
- The number of houses with pit toilets has increased from 875 to over 3000.
- Maize production has increased from the average five bags per acre (0.4 hectare) to an average of 12 bags.
- 200 ‘contact farmers’ have been trained in land preparation, planting and weeding procedures. The farmers share their knowledge and new skills with other farmers in the area.
