Well done!

Wouldn’t you celebrate if the time taken for one of your daily tasks was reduced by up to a third? Women in Budekwa certainly are rejoicing.

One of the new wells is officially "opened".

Last year, the Budekwa Area Development Programme built six wells with funding generously provided by a private donor in New Zealand.

Three of the wells are in primary schools, giving more than 1600 pupils safe water to drink, and making it easier for them to water their school gardens. The other three wells are in public areas.

“This project has been so helpful to us,” said one of the women who has benefited from the wells. “We used to spend half an hour fetching a 20-litre bucket of water, but now we can do it in 10 to 15 minutes, so we have plenty of time for other activities. Also, we can prepare baths for our husbands and children, who used to have to go to the ponds or rivers to bathe.”

The ADP helped the community form Water User Groups to maintain the three public wells. Combined, the groups support 150 families, which equates to about nine per cent of the population.

One of the water user groups is exceptionally development-minded, starting a farm project and drama group, and planning to raise poultry. The drama group has become so skilled that Budekwa ADP uses it to educate the community about HIV/AIDS prevention and control.

What can we say, but…“Well done!”
