Women power World Vision’s Budekwa Area Development Programme (ADP) focuses on improving livelihoods, but its development activities have also gone a long way towards raising the status of women. Experience has shown that women are more likely to focus additional earnings on the welfare of their households and especially their children, so World Vision staff have trained groups of women in small-business skills so they can produce and market products like soap, baking and tailoring services. The result has been outstanding both in terms of increased household incomes and involving women in the decisions about how that money is spent. “I use some of the money I earn to pay school fees for my children,” said one of the former trainees, now the chair of a tailoring group. “I have attended cookery classes run by the ADP and I have been involved in provision of cooking services at World Vision activities,” says another woman who now runs a café. She is enthusiastic about the impact her business has had on her family: “I can now cook a wide range of food, even foreign items like chips and cakes. This has helped me to attract customers to my café and thus raise my household income. I use the money I earn from my café to pay school fees for my two children who are in secondary school and to invest in my family’s farming activities. The [World Vision] programme has made my family more secure.” Although this may seem like a small step to women in New Zealand, discussing priorities and expenses with their husbands is a new and empowering experience for these Tanzanian women! |
