Multiplying it

Barnabas has applied skills learned through World Vision’s Bugabo Area Development Programme (ADP) to all aspects of his life and is reaping the rewards!

Improved banana plants are one
of the many ways World Vision
has assisted Barnabas.
With the help of World Vision, Barnabas has moved from a fear of modern agriculture to learning new techniques and implementing them on his farmlet. These days he supports others in his community as they follow in his footsteps.

Since World Vision trained Barnabas to keep dairy cows, his herd has grown to eight cows and he now gets 20 litres of milk every day. With five children of his own and two orphans he has taken in, Barnabas’ family not only enjoy the taste of milk each day, they are also benefiting from the vital nutrients it provides.

Bananas are a staple food for Barnabas’ family and he grows several varieties: some for cooking and others to eat fresh. World Vision has introduced improved, better producing varieties of bananas into the community and Barnabas has 15 of the new plants which are multiplying as well as producing fruit.

The manure from his cows has done wonders for the bananas and other crops and with plenty of nutrients in the soils, he has abundant harvests of bananas, yams, peanuts and cassava to eat, and coffee and vanilla to sell.

World Vision has helped Barnabas with his cash crops too, providing him with 15 vanilla vines and training him to grow and multiply them. As his vines mature, he provides cuttings to his neighbours to pass on the benefits.

As a result of all of these improvements, Barnabas can send all the children to school. He has been able to build a better house and has plenty of plans for the future. But for now he is content helping others. By sharing all his farming knowledge with his neighbours and making sure his children get a decent education, he is multiplying the benefits!
