Skills sustain life

From sunrise to sunset, the young man toils away in his small carpentry shop. It is long hours for little money, but 23-year-old Spirian sees himself as fortunate.

“At least I can support myself better than most of the others in my village,” he says.

Spirian has been in the Bugabo Area Development Programme’s sponsorship scheme since 1990. His mother is widowed, so World Vision helped Spirian learn a trade so he could support his family.

He earns approximately NZ$70 a month making chairs and tables, or doing woodwork repairs. With no tools of his own, he must hire them from someone in a neighbouring village.

“If I get my own tools I might be able to double my income,” he says wistfully.

However, the young man is not complaining. He knows that without the training that sponsorship made possible, he would likely have joined the ranks of dozens of unemployed teenagers and young people in his village. Now he has a chance of making a better future for his family and himself.
