Some of Bugabo ADP’s achievements in the past year:

Children are screened for health problems
such as anaemia.
  • Organised mock examinations for 722 Standard VII students from 19 schools. The mock exams help prepare students for the official exams, and give teachers an idea of where extra revision is needed.
  • Commenced building four classrooms and four teachers’ offices.
  • Provided 500 pupils with school uniforms.
  • Held a health check-up at Kishanje village school. During the exercise, held over five days in April 2003, almost 350 pupils were screened for common health problems. More than three-quarters of the children were found to be anaemic and over half had intestinal worms. Suitable treatment was provided or recommended.
  • Provided refresher training for 100 community counsellors and 38 village health workers.
  • Trained 20 ‘contact farmers’ in raising dairy cattle. Contact farmers are responsible for passing on their knowledge to other farmers in the area.
  • Provided 85 farmers with vanilla seeds.
  • Trained 75 farmers in animal husbandry and supplied milking goats to 30 farmers.
  • Protected eight natural springs so drinking water does not get contaminated.
  • Commenced building three houses for especially needy children who did not have adequate shelter.
  • Organised training sessions for 58 community leaders in project management.
  • Held two seminars about child rights, such as the right to protection. Ninety-two ADP committee members and community leaders also learnt about the special importance of education for girls.
