Keep talking

Teenagers love to talk! So, Bugabo Area Development Programme (ADP) is taking advantage of this fact to spread the word about HIV-prevention.

Teenagers learn the skills required to educate their
peers about HIV and AIDS with sensitivity.
Bugabo ADP is located in a region of Tanzania has a high incidence of AIDS. The ADP itself is home to more than 2,000 children who have lost one or both parents to the disease.

World Vision considers it vital to arm this generation with the knowledge they need to protect themselves against the virus that causes AIDS. Using a multi-pronged approach, they have found the most effective way to disseminate information to teenagers is to train peer educators who can dispel myths and provide accurate information and counselling to their peers as well as the wider community.

The first 40 teenagers to be trained formed a club called Kaagya Peer Educators’ Group, which is divided into sub groups for each village. The peer educators use the club to support and encourage each other as they educate their community about HIV and AIDS, using street theatre, visiting people in their homes, and offering one-on-one or group counselling.

The scheme has taken off and more teenagers are lining up for training to become peer educators. Kibale village subgroup started a year ago with only two members and now has 23!

Peer educators spreading HIV-prevention
messages in their community.
The community, keen to learn how to prevent HIV transmission, is supportive of the teenagers’ efforts. Local churches often invite them to run seminars to their young people.

The programme is working well. Teenagers are becoming more responsible about their sexual behaviour now they understand how easily HIV is spread. New community-based clubs offer teenagers recreational activities which provide them with creative ways to use their spare time rather than indulge in risky activities.

By encouraging teenagers to keep talking, and training them with accurate information about HIV-prevention, Bugabo ADP has found an easy way of educating a seriously at-risk group about HIV and AIDS.
