Having a cow!

Shija is overjoyed with the benefits his family is gaining from the dairy cow they received through World Vision.

Early in the year, World Vision trained Shija to care for and milk a cross-bred dairy cow. He built a safe place for the cow to live and was then given a cow, which was pregnant.

The cow gave birth to its calf just at the time when food shortages hit Shija’s family. Now, instead of worrying how he would provide for his wife, daughter and granddaughter, Shija trusted his cow to help. It produced 10 litres of milk a day for the family. Shija was surprised at how much more milk this cow produced than the local cows which are common in his area. “This cow saved my family from hunger,” says Shija.

Shija’s family drink two litres of nutritious milk every day. Regular customers buy five of the remaining litres, and the other two litres are sold in his village. The income allowed his family to buy food in the hungry season and purchase their other needs. Shija has great plans for using his profit to increase his future earning opportunities. “My plan is to improve my vegetable garden using money I get from selling the milk,” he says. Vegetables will be a welcome addition to their diet and if he has more than he needs he can sell them for a good price locally. His cow is useful for vegetable gardening too – the manure is a free source of fertiliser!
