Dramatic change

It is an understatement to say that new classrooms at Kilino primary school have improved the learning environment there – they have dramatically changed the school and improved the situation for students and teachers.

When it rains these old classrooms
become unsafe.
“It was difficult to have classes during the rainy season,” says John Lugenzi, the head teacher. “Whenever I saw clouds and suspected it would rain I sent all my students home. The mud walls of the old classrooms were so weak they could fall any time it rained.”

When World Vision began the Bukene Area Development Programme (ADP), staff talked to the people of Kilino village about helping to improve the safety of the school and the learning opportunities for their children. Although they had shown little concern in the past, with World Vision’s encouragement community members took an active role in building two new concrete classrooms for the school.

Students from Kilino promary school enjoy
their new classrooms.
After the first two classrooms were complete, World Vision and community leaders approached local councillors to suggest the council could match World Vision’s donation by building two more classrooms. The council agreed, and the school soon had four new classrooms!

Enrolments for the school have continued to increase, so World Vision and the community are in the process of building another two classrooms.

“Our learning and teaching environment has improved, and both teachers and pupils are motivated,” says John. “A big thank you to World Vision and its donors!”
