Bukene photo essay World Vision New Zealand Programme Support Officer, Anna Parsons, visited Bukene Area Development Programme (ADP) in April 2006. Here are some of her photos.
The children’s committee I met were just fantastic. Later I got to speak to just the girls. They were so on-to-it – asking lots of questions, but also telling me about the work they do to advocate for child rights in their community. They really know their stuff - they told me that children have the right to water, to education, to play and to heaps of other things. These children are the potential leaders of their communities and it was great to be able to encourage them.
Sofia works for Bukene ADP, monitoring the sponsored children. She is responsible for 200 sponsored children and visits them every month. One of the many aspects of her role is delivering sponsors’ letters to the children. Here she has a card with a school bus – one of the activity cards sponsors returned to World Vision New Zealand earlier this year. Sofia hopes to become a project manager in an ADP one day, and I’m sure she’ll get there.
The irrigation trenches in the foreground of this photo have allowed all kinds of agriculture to take place here. There are rice paddies in the middle! The area at the back left will be used for a seed multiplication project that begins late this year – so watch this space! |
