Achievements
Recently, Bukene Area Development Programme (ADP) has:
    Health and sanitation
  • Assisted village health workers to train 150 mothers about nutrition
  • Held five community meetings to teach people the correct way to use insecticide-treated mosquito nets
  • Provided 700 insecticide-treated mosquito nets at a subsidised price
  • Started constructing a house so health staff can stay locally; the community provided local materials for construction

  • HIV and AIDS
  • Formed and supported ten school HIV and AIDS clubs
  • Trained 325 parents to support the activities of school HIV and AIDS clubs
  • Provided ongoing training for 144 students who communicate HIV-prevention messages to their peers
  • Trained and provided equipment for 20 home visitors who care for children affected by HIV and AIDS
  • Trained members of three community care coalitions
  • Held a workshop to train local leaders and members of community care coalitions about the needs and rights of people affected by HIV and AIDS, and methods of combating stigma and discrimination

  • Education
  • Held ten community meetings about the importance of education
  • Supported 500 children affected by HIV and AIDS to attend school
  • Trained 30 primary school teachers to use HIV and AIDS educational materials
  • Held a refresher-training workshop attended by 30 teachers
  • Constructed two houses for teachers so they can live near the school where they teach
  • Established ten school environment clubs

  • Agriculture and food security
  • Organised two ongoing training workshops for 20 village agricultural facilitators and provided bicycles for them; they have now taught the modern farming techniques they learned to 300 farmers
  • Supplied 2,000kg of improved seeds and 40 ox-ploughs at subsidised prices
  • Provided ten dairy cows for farmers

  • Economic development
  • Held four workshops to train members of income-generating groups in food processing, marketing and entrepreneurship
  • Arranged an exchange visit for leaders of income-generating groups
  • Established a savings and credit society and educated community members about its role
  • Established 125 savings and credit groups and trained group treasurers in book-keeping

  • Leadership development
  • Formed a children’s committee and trained committee members in child rights
  • Trained leaders of a community-based organisation in management skills and arranged an educational exchange visit with a group in another area
  • Facilitated monthly meetings of the development committee and provided committee members with bicycles to help them support development in a number of villages

Challenges
The people of Bukene still have a number of challenges ahead of them. During the next year, World Vision will focus on:

  • Reducing the impact of HIV and AIDS on children by teaching children about HIV prevention and supporting children made vulnerable by the effects of HIV and AIDS on their communities
  • Working with teachers to improve the quality of education
  • Improving the nutrition and amount of food consumed by teaching farmers improved methods of farming and generating income
