Conserving the future

Trees are more than just decorative landscape features. They protect soil from erosion, offer building materials and firewood and some varieties provide fruit, which improves nutrition.

Members of Mapendo conservation group
tend their tree nursery.
In many parts of Africa, the need for building materials and fuel for fires has destroyed tree after tree. Such deforestation, with little replanting, leaves soils bare and can allows deserts to encroach.

World Vision is addressing the issue of deforestation in Dakama community while at the same time providing an innovative source of income for community members.

Dakama Area Development Programme (ADP) has educated community members about the importance of replanting and the nutritional value of fruit, thereby creating demand for tree seedlings.

Mapendo conservation group is one of a number of conservation groups that have been set up in Dakama. Together with the Government forestry department, World Vision trained the nine members of Mapendo conservation group to raise tree seedlings. World Vision then trained group members in financial management, assisted them to write a constitution and apply for official registration, and provided them with items necessary to run a nursery, such as watering cans and polythene tubes.

After its first year of operation, the group’s leader, Jonas Mugisha, is pleased with its successes. “This year our group grew 4,000 tree seedlings,” says Jonas. “Our plan for the coming agricultural season is to produce 25,000 tree seedlings. If demand exceeds this, we have the capacity to produce even more!

“We really appreciate the support of New Zealand sponsors. Your assistance has enabled Dakama ADP to promote this environment conservation and income-generation initiative.”
