Salum Yermia Lalago is married with two daughters, Juliana (13) and Happiness (4). The family lives in Lalago village which is part of Dakama Area Development Programme (ADP). Salum’s family is fully involved in ADP activities and he is a village health volunteer.

As a village health worker Salum has been trained by Dakama ADP in HIV/AIDS, malaria, immunisation, family planning, nutrition, sanitation and hygiene. His family is an example of the implementation of his health knowledge – they sleep under insecticide-treated mosquito nets, the home is clean and hygienic, his daughters healthy and family planning is evident as he and his wife have only two children.

Salum has done his job well. In his village most children under five and women of childbearing age are immunised, severe malnutrition has been significantly reduced and the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets has increased.

When not undertaking his health responsibilities, Salum is a farmer. Last year the ADP trained him in improved methods of farming. Instead of the traditional way of scattering seed, he was taught to carefully plant the seeds in rows. The ADP also provided him high yield maize seeds at a subsidised price. Salum employed the methods he was taught and reaped the benefits. His crop this season was a bumper eight 90kg bags an acre; double that of the previous year. Salum is keen to pass on what he has learned about farming to other members of his village too.

Though Juliana is currently in grade five, Salum has big plans for her and Happiness, who is still a preschooler. “I intend for my children to get quality schooling, completing their education through to university level,” he says. “I want them to have a brighter future, as expressed in World Vision Tanzania’s motto ‘Bringing hope to the children of Tanzania’.

“I am grateful for the support Dakama ADP and World Vision give us. The techniques we learn are of benefit to us and are sustainable.”
