Healthy living

Improving the health of communities is a vital part of Dakama ADP. Juliana, a village health worker explains how World Vision training has helped her to improve the situation in her village.

Village health worker Juliana takes
her job seriously.
“Dakama ADP facilitates workshops for health workers to improve our knowledge of community-based primary healthcare. As village health workers, we can now effectively educate our communities about primary healthcare practices essential for preventing disease. When I work in my community I use the techniques I learned through the ADP.

“I visit people in their homes and hold community meetings to educate my fellow community members about boiling water, using dish-drying racks, as well as constructing and using sanitary latrines which prevent communicable diseases like cholera, dysentery, typhoid and malaria.

“I also make sure members of my community know the importance of immunising children under 5 and women of child-bearing age.

“HIV and AIDS are common in my community, but because of my work the community no longer discriminates against people who suffer from this disease. I make sure people understand it is their responsibility to care for others and I encourage them to go for HIV-testing and counselling themselves. There is still much to do in this area. I hold regular community meetings to remind everyone to avoid situations that could expose them to HIV. It is important to make sure they clearly understand that AIDS is a disease that is in no way related to witchcraft, and that HIV transmission can be controlled if the whole community fights it effectively.

“Training facilitated by Dakama ADP has improved my ability to provide effective community health education and I am grateful to World Vision for this.”
