Learning to farm Emmanuel was one of nine farmers from Dakama Area Development Programme (ADP) selected by his community last year to attend World Vision-sponsored training to become a Village Agricultural Facilitator.
“The aim of the training was to equip key farmers with knowledge of modern techniques so we could work as Village Agricultural Facilitators and assist the government-employed Ward Agricultural Facilitators to provide agricultural extension services to other farmers in our villages,” Emmanuel says. “This is a great idea because there is no way two Ward Agricultural Facilitators can meet the technical needs of farmers from ten villages.” During the course, the farmers learned to select the best seed varieties, space plants appropriately, use manure and fertiliser, rotate crops, grow vegetables, undertake agro-forestry and form farmers’ associations. By the end of the week they could see how these modern agricultural techniques could be used to improve farming in their villages. “I was excited to receive this training. I couldn’t wait to put it into practice on my own land and share it with the other farmers in my village,” Emmanuel says.
Emmanuel’s results are enough to convince others of the merit of the new techniques; his crops are growing well and he expects a good harvest. “On behalf of farmers in Dakama community,” Emmanuel says, “I would like to extend my gratitude to the sponsors in New Zealand whose financial support to Dakama ADP has touched our lives.” |
