Achievements in Numbers

World Vision activities have had a profound effect on community life in Dakama. Here are some of the measurements of development, comparing the situation before World Vision began Dakama ADP to now, 15 years later:

Health
  • Malnutrition has decreased substantially – only 0.9 per cent of children are moderately malnourished (down from 23 per cent) and just 0.4 per cent of children are severely malnourished (compared to 3.3 per cent)
  • Of women of childbearing age, 87 per cent are immunised, compared to 18 per cent at the beginning of the project
  • More than 60 per cent of babies are delivered at health facilities, contributing to decreased infant and maternal mortality
  • Instead of using traditional methods to treat malaria, 86 per cent of households now go straight to hospital, significantly improving the malaria survival rate; a similar percentage can now recognise the symptoms of malaria
  • More than 70 per cent of households are using mosquito nets to prevent malaria; most are insecticide-treated, for better protection
  • Drinking water is boiled by 71 per cent of households; this makes it safe to use and controls the transmission of waterborne diseases
  • The percentage of households with sanitary latrines has increased from 64 per cent to 84 per cent
Education
  • School attendance has increased from 48 per cent of enrolled children, at the beginning of the Dakama ADP, to 98 per cent now
  • Enrolment in Standard 1 (the first year of primary school) has increased from 45 per cent of children, before World Vision began its activities in Dakama, to 98 per cent of children
  • Percentage of students passing national end of primary school examinations has increased from 16 per cent at the beginning of the ADP, to 61 per cent
  • Nearly 80 per cent of men and 56 per cent of women (over 15 years old) can now read and write
