Through the eyes of an old man
“I am grateful to Dakama ADP for the support offered to our community, particularly in the education sector,” says Bunella Ndulu.

Bunella has nine children and 50 grandchildren and lives in Dakama Area Development Programme (ADP).
“When I was a child we used to have our classes outside under the trees. If there were buildings, they were made of mud with thatched roofs. Now through a partnership between Dakama ADP and the community, my 50 grandchildren enjoy attending school in a good learning environment. The community provided labour and locally available materials for construction of the classrooms, as well as paying the masons.
“The ADP provides instructional materials and further training for teachers so they may teach our grandchildren well and improve their academic performance.
“I have personally benefited from village health workers trained by the ADP. My grandchildren are immunised and we know how to make and use sanitary toilets so we don’t suffer from preventable diseases like diarrhoea and cholera. Also, subsidised insecticide-treated mosquito nets prevent us from malaria attacks and save treatment costs.
“Having seen the durable classrooms, I am planning to replace the thatched roof of my house with iron sheets and as soon as I get sufficient funds I may construct a better house as well.”
