Achievements
Recently, Dakama Area Development Programme (ADP) has:

    Health
  • Trained 20 traditional birth attendants and 20 village health workers in modern hygienic techniques, and provided materials for the birth attendants

  • HIV and AIDS
  • Formed five community care coalitions and trained members to counsel and support children and adults affected by HIV and AIDS
  • Facilitated community care coalitions to provide educational support for 280 children
  • Trained 26 teachers to use HIV and AIDS education materials in class
  • Trained 75 primary school students to educate others about HIV and AIDS

  • Education
  • Provided 200 school desks
  • Held refresher-training workshops for 23 teachers and 50 school committee members
  • Constructed four houses so teachers can stay near the schools they teach in

  • Water
  • Installed two rainwater-harvesting systems on top of schools and taught people from two villages to use them
  • Trained 60 members of 23 water user groups to manage the groups and water sources in the long term

  • Agricultural and economic development
  • Provided half a tonne of improved maize seed for farmers
  • Trained 38 women to keep poultry
  • Provided ox-ploughs at a subsidised price for income-generating groups
  • Trained 25 people to keep bees and provided them with bees and modern beehives on a revolving loan basis
  • Established five tree nurseries to provide seedlings to combat deforestation; 3,000 seedlings were planted
  • Trained 132 leaders of income-generating groups in management and book-keeping
  • Assisted five income-generating groups to write group constitutions
  • Facilitated 43 income-generating groups to register with the district government

  • Leadership development
  • Held workshops to train 60 community leaders about good governance, management and ownership of development programmes
  • Reviewed the constitution of a community-based organisation and assisted the organisation to obtain official registration
Challenges
The people of Dakama still have a number of challenges ahead of them. During the next year, World Vision will focus on building the capacity of community leaders, community-based organisations and community care coalitions to address the needs of the community into the future.
