Spreading the word

Herman Makota is not boasting when he unashamedly declares himself to be an inspiration for other farmers – it is official.

Feeding their family is easy for Herman and his wife.
Herman is a ‘contact farmer’ with the Dakama Area Development Programme (ADP). The ADP teaches improved agricultural techniques to selected local farmers like Herman. These ‘contact farmers’ are then expected to pass on their new knowledge and skills to others in the ADP area.

“I appreciate what World Vision has done through Dakama ADP to help me improve crop production,” says Herman, whose harvests have more than doubled since his involvement in the programme.

“The ADP has given seminars on improved agriculture and supported me with good quality seeds. Now I am a good model. My neighbours can adopt my practices. Me, my wife and family are very happy with our farm. We are getting sufficient food throughout the year. Famine is not a problem in my family.”

Mbalu Sandu, who lives in the same village as Herman, was not amongst those selected to be a contact farmer. However, she has come to appreciate their contribution.

“They have been influential in our community,” says Mbalu. “Many people have adopted farming practices from them, including me. Production has increased for all my crops. I am now capable of growing sorghum, maize and sweet potatoes and getting good harvests, so I thank Dakama ADP for operating in my village.”
