Then and now

Child and community sponsorship began in Dakama ADP in 1993. Since then:

Farmers’ Focus Groups support local growers.
  • The number of pupils enjoying a good learning environment (e.g. well-built classrooms and proper desks) has increased from 21 percent to 70 percent. Improvements have included 75 classrooms built or repaired, 24 teachers’ offices repaired, 25 teachers’ houses (duplexes) built and 1870 desks and tables supplied.
  • The enrolment rate for Standard 1 (Year One) has increased from 45 percent to 95.5 percent. The primary school attendance rate has increased from 48 percent to 97 percent.
  • The pass rate for Standard 7 examinations has risen from 1 percent to 8.8 percent.
  • The number of children selected to attend secondary school has increased from 0.5 percent to 2.7 percent.
  • Two dispensaries have been built and one health centre repaired.
  • Immunisation coverage has increased from 36 percent to 100 percent.
  • Severe malnutrition has been completely eradicated and moderate malnutrition has decreased from 18.4 percent to 0.8 percent.
  • 38 water tanks have been built in primary schools and health facilities to provide clean drinking water.
  • Educational video shows with strong messages of HIV/AIDS prevention have reached approximately 35,000 people. An HIV/AIDS action committee of 77 members has been formed and trained on the spread and control of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases. The committee is responsible for the community response to the AIDS problem, including counselling those affected by AIDS and educating their peers about the disease. About 85 percent of the community are now aware of how to control the spread of HIV/AIDS.
  • 18 Farmers’ Focus Groups have been formed. World Vision has supported the groups by providing training, seeds, ploughs and other agricultural materials.
  • More than 983,000 tree seedlings have been planted in the community. Tree seeds and polythene tubes have been supplied to primary schools so they can establish tree nurseries.
  • 15 Income Generating Activity groups have been formed and trained in establishing small businesses, credit management etc. Ten of the groups have opened bank accounts so they can bank profits from their group activities.
