Deciding factor Gizera reached her 40s without knowing her worth as a woman. But she will make sure her four children – her daughters and her sons – understand that women have an important role to play in their families and communities.
When she married, Gizera fell into the same patterns she had seen at home – fully relying on her husband and allowing him to make all the decisions. “Whatever my husband said was done,” she says. “And I didn’t feel the need to enter into discussions about his decisions.” Their acceptance of the status quo led to a lack of food and a daily struggle for survival. “We were poor and needy; we had no idea change was possible,” Gizera says. “We never had enough food and year after year we suffered the consequences.” When World Vision, through Ibuga Area Development Programme (ADP) , began holding community meetings and offering training in Gizera’s village she began to see life in a new way. “I came to realise that cash-cropping of coffee and bananas was not the way to eradicate poverty in my community,” she says. So Gizera joined World Vision’s agricultural programme which taught her modern agricultural techniques and small-business skills. Armed with her new knowledge, Gizera talked with her husband about how they could change their future.
As a result, family life for Gizera and her husband has improved. They grow enough food to last all year and can pay for additional expenses, including secondary school fees for their oldest son. Confident about her importance in the family, Gizera looks forward to full involvement in their future decisions and direction. “I know that I am a significant person in my family and have a role in decision-making,” Gizera says. “My husband and I talk about issues and come up with positive solutions. I am confident that in the future things will get even better for my family.” |
