Doing it together

A motivated school committee and a passionate community are helping Nyaiwabaga primary school to overcome its biggest problem – over population.

This temporary classroom doesn't protect
these standard four students from
extremes of weather.
With nearly 500 students, the school is bursting at the seams forcing one class to take its lessons in a temporary classroom with thatched walls and roof. The thatch keeps the students out of the heat of the sun, but doesn’t provide any protection during the rainy season. When it rains, classes cannot to continue and the students from this temporary class are sent home.

Each year school management must make a tough decision – which year level will be allocated the thatched classroom. In 2006, standard seven students, in their final year of primary school, drew the short straw. The school was very proud of the results its 2005 standard seven students obtained in their exams – all 34 passed and gained entry to secondary school. However, after a year in the thatched classroom, interrupted by many days when it was too wet to go to school, only eight of the 34 students in the 2006 cohort gained secondary school places. The students and school management were terribly disappointed.

Nyaiwabaga school committee decided it was time for action. They began talking with parents and relatives from the village and motivated people to donate materials and labour to construct a new classroom for the school. Villagers were enthusiastic and promised almost everything needed. The committee then approached World Vision for corrugated iron sheets for the roof.

Construction is just beginning in Nyaiwabaga. In the meantime, standard four pupils are preparing for their exams in the temporary classroom and they look forward to completing the school year in a new weather-tight classroom!
