Very handy

Plaxeda Tibenderana is a widow with four children. On her small plot of land she grew coffee and bananas to sell.

Internationally the price of coffee has fallen, meaning this crop became less and less profitable for Plaxeda. With decreasing soil fertility the production in her banana plantation also decreased, meaning she earned very little from her land. Each day was a struggle to make ends meet.

Ibuga Area Development Programme (ADP) works to ensure people in the community earn enough to sustain their families. Plaxeda heard of some women in her village who had learned handcrafts through the ADP and who had started to turn a profit from their products. “This could help me to increase my meagre income,” she thought to herself.

With ADP support Plaxeda undertook handcraft training. She learned to make baskets, bags, hats and mats using locally available natural materials such as reeds and banana fibres.

“When I started collecting reeds and banana fibres I discovered you can find them all over the place, because most people in my village consider them useless,” she said. “But out of these useless items I can make baskets, hats, bags and mats – earning me 5,000 Tanzanian shillings [NZ$7 to NZ$14] a month.”

Ibuga ADP continues to work with women like Plaxeda, expanding the market for their products and supporting them to attend trade fairs. Plaxeda says: “I thank Ibuga ADP for their support in this new money making activity. It sure pays to use the local resources we have.”
