Milking time
As a small farmer Deogratias Petro earned very little. His three children frequently became ill, so what little money he earned from his banana and coffee plants he spent on medicines for his children.

In 2001 Ibuga Area Development Programme (ADP) suggested a solution to his difficulties and provided Deogratias Petro with a dairy cow. “I was very keen to have it because I was told that having a cow at my home could help solve my problems,” he said.
What a difference it made! Nutrients contained in the milk improved the health of his children. He used cow waste to fertilise his farm and banana plantation with impressive results – the amount of bananas and beans produced increased greatly and he could grow enough to feed his family satisfactorily. Deogratias Petro was then able to sell any surplus milk and crops to supplement his income. He has now saved enough to build a new, modern home.
“In the long run I came to realize that my children weren’t falling sick as often as they used to,” he said. “It really surprised me that having a cow at home could prevent disease. I’m going to spread this message to all the members of my community. Thank you Ibuga ADP for this support which improved my family’s health.” .
