Water-harvesting systems provide plenty of
safe water for students to quench their
thirst while at school.
Achievements
Recently, Ibuga Area Development Programme (ADP) has:
    Health and sanitation
  • Provided insecticide-treated mosquito nets for all 2,250 sponsored children and 1,200 other members of the community
  • Trained 60 community members to monitor, and respond to, incidences of malaria in their communities
  • Trained 315 mothers to make more nutritious food for children under 5 years old
  • Held four community meetings to educate mothers and pregnant women about nutrition, childcare and hygiene
  • Trained 168 traditional birth attendants about family planning and hygienic techniques relating to child birth
  • Improved five community water sources
  • Held four community meetings in which 200 households learned to build improved latrines; three-quarters of the households who attended have since built hygienic latrines
  • Constructed three water tanks and water-harvesting systems for schools
  • Trained 50 members of children’s committees about hygiene and education

  • HIV and AIDS
  • Formed and trained four community care coalitions to support families affected by HIV and AIDS
  • Held four community meetings to increase awareness of HIV and AIDS
  • Trained 50 young people to educate their peers about HIV and AIDS
  • Trained 130 primary school teachers to use HIV and AIDS educational materials in class
  • Constructed homes for three child-headed families and provided food for 30 child-headed families

  • Education
  • Provided school uniforms for 300 children affected by HIV and AIDS and supported 119 with school fees
  • Provided schools with 270 desks and 80 tables and chairs
  • Completed construction of two classrooms
  • Awarded prizes to the four best school committees

  • Agricultural and economic development
  • Trained 42 farmers to keep poultry and dairy cows
  • Trained 26 farmers to produce vanilla as a cash crop
  • Arranged an exchange visit to another community for 22 contact farmers
  • Held workshops on intercropping for 22 community-based agricultural extension workers
  • Held seven public meetings on intercropping and other modern agricultural techniques
  • Trained members of five community-based organisations and 110 income-generating groups in management, marketing and savings and loans schemes
  • Supported 26 teenagers affected by HIV and AIDS to establish income-generating activities, by providing bicycles, sewing machines or carpentry equipment

Challenges
The people of Ibuga still have a number of challenges ahead of them. During the next year, World Vision will focus on providing educational opportunities for children, addressing HIV and AIDS, increasing incomes and strengthening community leadership.
