Training torch
“Knowledge is power,“ asserts an Ibuga farmer. “I thank World Vision for giving me a torch to pass through the darkness of poverty.”

The ‘torch’ Richard Muyaga refers to is modern farming techniques, which he learnt in 1998. Then in his late 30s, he was struggling to grow maize and cabbages on a small plot.
After his training, Richard, 44, received pineapple seedlings from World Vision. He planted these, in addition to bananas and cassava, and later bought two cows, which give him 40 litres of milk a day.
Milk sales provide a steady income, and Richard earns approximately NZ$400 a month from crop sales and through a small grocery shop he opened. His new knowledge has also benefited other local farmers.
“I have been able to visit them and teach them how farming and keeping livestock can bring good results,” says Richard.
With this income, Richard has been able to buy a truck to carry his crops to market. However, another investment is closer to this father’s heart. Richard is determined that his children will have the educational opportunities that he missed out on.
“Two of my children are in secondary school and I will make sure that they go to college. I believe nobody was born to be poor. It’s possible to be transformed.”
