Celebrations

Iselamagazi ADP is celebrating the following achievements:

Farmers learn to make food storage bins.
  • The percentage of children who passed primary school leaving examinations increased to 26 percent in 2002, compared to 24 percent in 2001.
  • School farms have been established in every school in the ADP area as part of a school feeding plan.
  • 91 percent of homes now have pit latrines (compared with 79 percent in 1992). The latrines improve sanitation and reduce the spread of disease.
  • A total of 794,000 trees have been planted in the community since October 1991 due to the ADP’s environmental programme. The programme includes establishing tree nurseries at local schools, holding tree-planting campaigns and training people in energy-saving technology, such as improved mud stoves that reduce fuel wood consumption. The ADP’s goal is to have 1.5 million trees planted by October 2006.
  • There are now 77 Farmers’ Focus Groups in the community – groups of farmers who act as peer support for one another as they experiment with new techniques to improve agricultural production.
