When he left primary school, Bujiku didn’t have any hope for his future… until he joined a World Vision tailoring class.

After completing primary school, Bujiku wasn’t selected to attend secondary school – his grades weren’t good enough to win one of the limited places. For some, there is the option of attending a private secondary school, but Bujiku’s parents had no money to pay the expensive fees, so he spent his days idly at home.

In 2001, staff from Iselamagazi ADP formed a youth group for out-of-school young people in his village, and Bujiku went along. Through the group, he learned about HIV-prevention, support and care for people living with AIDS, life skills, improved agriculture, vegetable gardening, business skills, and income-generating activities.

Bujiku was particularly interested in tailoring as a way of earning money, so he worked hard to learn all he could about it. World Vision staff noted his interest and skill and helped him attend more tailoring classes. Within a short time it was evident that Bujiku was a highly skilled tailor.

In June 2004, after completing his training, Bujiku established a small tailoring business using a loan of 25,000 Tanzanian Shillings (NZ$35) from his parents. His business earns him a steady income of between NZ$16.50 and NZ$21 each day, and in certain seasons he earns a lot more – his daily income doubles during harvest season, and the lead-up to the Christmas and New Year period is the most profitable.

“With all my heart, I thank the staff of Iselamagazi ADP,” says Bujiku. “The training and support I received have changed my life. I now earn enough to keep myself and contribute to my family expenses. If not for World Vision, I would still be without hope.”
