Some of Iselamagazi ADP’s achievements in the past year:

Women learn how to make improved mud stoves.
  • Built four classrooms and two teachers’ offices.
  • Trained 38 community leaders in children’s rights, such as the right to education.
  • Provided 240 litres of kerosene to the health centre.
  • Raised awareness of HIV/AIDS by holding 169 education sessions for Standard V-VII students and making HIV/AIDS the major theme of village health education sessions.
  • Trained 26 community-based counsellors, six hospital-based counsellors and 12 primary school teachers in HIV/AIDS prevention and control.
  • Formed and trained 12 primary school health clubs. The clubs provide extra-curricula health education for interested children.
  • Held meetings for community leaders, government officials and villagers on the importance of latrines for good sanitation.
  • Trained 24 ‘contact farmers’. These farmers have responsibility for sharing their knowledge of new techniques and crops with other local farmers.
  • Organised a study tour for 36 farmers who visited another area to learn how to grow chickpeas.
  • Provided 80 ox ploughs to farmers at half price.
  • Held two training sessions on soil management and improved ground cover.
  • Organised training for 20 women in the manufacture and use of improved mud stoves, which burn less wood and create less smoke.
  • Trained 30 farmers in agroforestry (growing trees alongside crops). Agroforestry improves crop and livestock yields, and provides the farmer with income-earning products such as timber, firewood, fruit, nuts, oils and medicinal extracts.
  • Trained community leaders in skills required for ongoing management of community development projects, such as budgeting, fundraising, bookkeeping, auditing, monitoring and management skills.
  • Provided bicycles to 34 ADP Committee members to help them attend community development meetings.
